Scholarship opportunities at Presby Hall

New applications will be accepted beginning in the Spring of 2013.

Former members of McKinley Church and Foundation have been extremely generous in their support of various efforts and projects. Seven (7) scholarships have been established to benefit students.




The McKinley Foundation Freshman Scholarship

The Foundation Freshman Scholarships (5 Awards) of two-thousand dollars ($2000) each will be awarded by the McKinley Foundation Board of Directors. Preference is given to entering 2013 freshmen, who are engaged in civic or volunteer activities, social justice activities, or who have financial need.

Namesake: The McKinley Foundation was named for US Senator William McKinley, a well-known humanitarian and benefactor in this community and the University of Illinois. It was built at the height of the Depression and dedicated in 1930.

Throughout its 100 plus years, McKinley Foundation in cooperation with the McKinley Presbyterian Church has sought to live out its inclusive faith and socially conscious convictions through social justice work and human service.

Awarded by: The Board of Directors of the McKinley Foundation at the University of Illinois.

Requirements: Be a Presby Hall resident during the academic year in which the award is made.

Preference is given to those students who meet the following criteria, as ranked in this order:

  1. Civic engagement or volunteer service, especially for social justice issues, environmental issues, etc.
  2. Academic achievement
  3. Financial need

The Ullman Scholarship

The two-thousand dollar ($2000) Ullman Scholarship is awarded by a joint committee of the McKinley Church governing board and the McKinley Foundation Board of Directors. Preference is given to those who have financial need, who are involved with social justice activities, or who are engaged in civic or volunteer activities. Academic achievement may also be used as a criterion, as can involvement in the study of music or participation in organized musical groups, especially at McKinley Presbyterian.

Namesake: The late Rina Ullman of Urbana, McKinley Church member.

Awarded by: A Joint Committee of the McKinley Church Governing Board and the McKinley Foundation Board of Directors.

Requirements: Be a Presby Hall resident during the academic year in which the award is made.

Preference is given to those students who meet the following criteria, as ranked in this order:

  1. Financial need
  2. Civic engagement or volunteer service, especially for social justice issues, environmental issues, etc.
  3. Academic achievement
  4. Pursuing study of music; participating in organized choruses, orchestras, etc.; member of a church choir, especially that of McKinley Presbyterian Church

The Wert Scholars Fund

The Wert Scholars Fund is awarded by the Foundation. It is restricted to those who are studying for the ministry, including lay ministry. Preference is given (in this order) to students who are or have been involved with McKinley Presbyterian Church and/or Foundation, with other local Presbyterian churches, or those in the Presbytery of Southeastern Illinois. Financial need may also be used as a criterion as well as civic engagement and academic achievement.

Namesake: The late Prof. Charles A. Wert of the UI Materials Science and Engineering Department, McKinley Church member and elder.

Awarded by: The Board of Directors of the McKinley Foundation at the University of Illinois.

Preference is given to those students who meet the following criteria, as ranked in this order:

  1. Involvement with McKinley Presbyterian Church and/or McKinley Foundation
  2. Involvement with Champaign-Urbana area Presbyterian churches
  3. Involvement with a church within the Presbytery of Southeastern Illinois
  4. Financial need
  5. Civic engagement/volunteer service, especially for social justice issues, environmental issues, etc.
  6. Academic achievement
